Amahoro Integrated Development Programme

Background

AIDP was created in 2007 with its headquarters in Musanze District in the northern province. This area was badly affected by the 1994 genocide and the 1996-1998 war against infiltrators both of which created insecurity and adversity though socio-economic disturbances.

About Us

AIDP is a registered charitable organization, working in the northern part of Rwanda. We are committed to protecting the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized children, by giving them the chance to grow up and live with families with a safe and secure future.

The children we work with

We work with children who are, or are at risk of being, separated from their families:

  • Children living in our interim care centre, and those at risk of being placed in a care centre.
  • Children living with foster families.
  • Children living and working on the streets, including those who are in, or likely to come into, conflict with the law.
  • Child workers, particularly those who are exploited in domestic labour.
  • Trafficked children, including commercially and sexually exploited children.

How we help

  • We give children a chance to grow up in loving families and communities.
  • We protect children from abuse, discrimination and exploitation.
  • We empower children, their families and communities, to create opportunities for a better life.
  • We innovate to bring about lasting, positive change in partnership with communities and the government.

Housing scheme

We also help the local community to repair homes or, because of the bad housing conditions or simply because they are homeless, build new homes for them. Also because of the critical situation with orphans, we build houses that can hold up to 7 children, and then provide them with a stable and loving environment to live in. When one house is finished, our aim is to always have another one under construction.

Interim Care Centre

Our education centre provides short term care for those orphaned and abandoned children, while we are looking for a long term solution - a family. Until it’s found, the centre provides the children with welfare services such as education, health care services and counseling.

Target beneficiaries

Identified orphans and other children whose need of help is described as urgent. Currently this is a total of 761 children in the Ruhengeri region. Right now we are providing a home for 16 of them at the centre and another 16 are being assisted in foster families, 130 are listed on our pending list. Through are housing scheme we hope to provide homes for these children.

Volunteering programme

Listed below are activities that volunteers can help us with.

  • Professional child care or other technical knowledge that will be taught at the centre.
  • Renovation of structures in the orphanage compound and the community surroundings.
  • Housing scheme, where people will be involved in direct construction of houses and household equipment or any other help of that kind.
